I was comparing my behind-the-scenes to everybody else's "highlight reel" and coming up short...

Updated: Mar 25, 2022

In my youth, I would compare myself to everything; my peers, celebrities, ideals and expectations. This habit destroyed my self-worth before it even had the chance to develop. I was comparing my behind-the-scenes to everybody else's "highlight reel" and coming up short every time. I see now, that the only things I should be comparing myself to are the past and future versions of myself, because this gives me a sense of control and progress toward my goals. The more I compare myself to outside forces and ideologies, the more overwhelmed I become.

I still slip up, but when I do, I try not to be too hard on myself because I know this is something that we're conditioned to do. As a society, we are indoctrinated with the idea that our value is determined by how we measure up to the "standards". In hindsight, I've come to realize that the things I was aiming for and the people I aspired to be like were in direct contradiction to my core beliefs. This was a huge turning point in my life, and because of this awareness, everything has changed.

By reducing the need for comparison, I rarely have to deal with the obsessive thoughts that go along with it. And when they do pop up, I simply remind myself that the urge to compare comes from a lower vibration that does not align with my values. I put it behind me, and get back to my day.
