Don't let the smoke stop you.

I was driving through New Mexico the other day and came upon some devastating wildfires. It was the first time I had ever been in that scenario, and I was completely out of my element. When I peered out my side windows, I noticed that the sky had an unusual yellow hue to it, and I discovered that I had become very disoriented as a result. The sky was also fully engulfed in smoke, which caused a state of trepidation to emerge within me.
Growing up in the flatlands, I’m used to having a clear view of the lane ahead of me, but the twists and turns in this region were a whole different experience. Between the fire and the winding roads, my field of vision had been drastically reduced, leaving me feeling completely unnerved. I took a few slow, deep breaths and centered myself. I came to the realization that although I couldn’t see the horizon, the area immediately surrounding my car was perfectly clear.
This struck me as an apt metaphor for life. Situations where we’re unable to see the road ahead of us can be really frightening. But we must proceed in faith, trusting that the path will be revealed as we progress. One day at a time, one step at a time.
