Is Overthinking Always Bad?

By Ashley Huckabee

People frequently accuse me of “overthinking,” but I often wonder if those same people aren’t occasionally guilty of UNDER thinking. It’s perplexing to me that so many regard reflecting on your life as a negative thing. While it’s true that there’s a point at which this habit can shift from strategic to counterproductive, I don’t believe we should completely eradicate it from our lives. It’s my opinion that the goal should instead be to learn to think more effectively.

I suspect the reason this is such a popular view is because people mistakenly assume that analyzing a situation is the same as worrying. I’ll admit that for the first 30 years of my life they were one in the same, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

I find what determines the outcome the most is methodology. Are you analyzing circumstances in order to come up with proactive solutions? Or are you just spinning your wheels and exacerbating your angst? The first is highly productive, while the second typically only serves to escalate our fear.

Check back next Wednesday for a method to overcome the stigma associated with “overthinking."
